In the thicket of being - on the drawings of the "Daylight-cycle"

Alice Henkes, 2014

Fragments, closeups and hints are the building blocks of the simultaneously pleasurable and confusing visual world of Matthias Wyss’ drawings, creating a multilayered narrative about what it means to be human. The thin line between reality and dream is frequently hard to make out in these drawings. Figures that remain somewhat indeterminate seem to rise from turbulent, animated elements, soaring euphorically or writhing in agony. They merge with or emerge from unfathomable landscapes.

Matthias Wyss brings forth human figures, animals, fashionable clothes and sneakers, trees and entire landscapes on his small-scale sheets of drawings. The finely pencilled lines surge across the paper like a sprouting plant. Personal thoughts and dreams are equally part of this organic process as are reflections on social discourse or references to art history.
